I have had this happen many times. I would love to know how to avoid it. Working with SP Designer has caused me countless hours of fixing things that should work. At this point I am very frustrated with Sharepoint and Sharepoint Designer. I would use an alternative if there was one.

I love MS but lately they are like a bad relationship with an ex-girlfriend. Even thought the relationship is unhealthy you keep going back because it is all you have and you don't know what else to do.

Hi Pavadis,

Great guide which worked almost perfectly, except for just one little thing. In my case the DataValueField was supposed to be "ID" instead of "Title".

Also another thing: How is sorting arranged in the drop down menu? And is this adjustable?

Love to hear from you. Again great post. Many, many thanks for it.

All the best,
Quincy

I finally figured it out after hours of searching! From here:
http://www.visifire.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=950

When displaying data from an SQL database you have to use this "dsQueryResponse/NewDataSet/Row" instead of this "dsQueryResponse/Rows/Row".

Also, you need to make sure in the DataView properties under the Paging tab that "Display all items" is selected otherwise you'll only get counts of the first 10 items!

SharePoint is such a little stinker sometimes...

This does work on MOSS publishing pages which has a more useful hyperlink control, following the following steps

Step 1: Go to the area of the page you would like the link to appear and select a word (this means you can find the link later for editing if need be) and click the "new hyperlink button"

Step 2: Enter a value in the bookmark field only - we shall call this the ID (as it gets inserted in the ID tag of the anchor)

Step 3: Go to the area of the page you would like to link from, type in the link text select it and click "new hyperlink"

Step 4: Fill in the address of the hyperlink with #ID, where ID is whatever you called your previous bookmark and # is a hash symbol.

One other thing you can try if you are using Vista, especially with SharePoint Designer is to run it in XP compatibility mode.

To do this, find the .exe for SharePoint Designer (usually located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12 as SPDESIGN.EXE). Right click on the file and choose Properties. Go to the Compatibility tab. Check the box for Run this program in compatibility mode for:. Then select Windows XP and click OK.

I've seen at times where this runs a little smoother. Good luck!

Well done Pam! This worked very well for what I needed and since I don't know XSL like the back of my hand your instructions were spot on. I only had to modify Data View Properties/Paging tab ~ (Display all Items) because I had so many cells. I needed this in a pinch and it worked wonders for me and since we don't have Excel Services in our MOSS deployment. Too expensive.... :) Thank you!

I've had this problem a few time. Most recently, the file in question had several tens of thousands lines of whitespace. I came up with a little trick to make sure I wasn't deleting anything important: Place cursor at the top of the whitespace, scroll down to the bottom and shift click. Cut and paste it into an excel file, then you can put the filters on the top row and make sure they all say 'Blank.' It was alot quicker that way than having to page down through hundreds of pages.

They really need to fix this little bug, it's a pain.
